Study reveals average penis size in each US state and exactly where American men exaggerate the most

Men have always been obsessed with what they have going on down below and comparing it with others. We can see this in art from around the world, from penis graffiti on the walls of Pompeii to a 44,000-year-old phallic pendant discovered in the mountains of Mongolia.

Every single one is different; they can be long, short, skinny, circumsized, or even have a bend in them, but inevitably the main obsession for men has become the overall size of their reproductive organ.

This has, in part, been exaggerated by the prevalence of male pornography consumption, which around two in three men in the US admit to using regularly. This can distort their perception of how ‘big’ a penis should actually be.

Scientific studies have shown that the average penis size around the world is somewhere between 5.1 and 5.5 inches. However, if a study examining the genital size of 1300 men in the United States is anything to go by, the researchers can’t have been asking the well-endowed residents of Alabama or West Virginia.

The average male penis length in some states is more than two inches larger than others (Bespoke Surgery)

A self-reported volunteer study by Bespoke Surgery found that men in Alabama have a whopping average length of 7.44 inches, while West Virginia residents held a claim to 7 inch packages.

Other states with men reporting the largest penis sizes were Louisiana (7.15), West Virginia (7.00), Vermont (6.98), and Utah (6.97) Oklahoma (6.93) and Alaska (6.92). These states saw men claim to have junk almost two inches larger than others.

At the other end of the scale, the state where men reported having the smallest genitals was Delaware, where data showed an average length of 5.22 inches. This was closely followed by New Mexico, which reported 5.36-inch averages.

Only eight states reported average lengths under six inches, which, in addition to those mentioned, were Maryland (5.50), Georgia (5.69), Rhode Island (5.83), Arkansas (5.90), Indiana (5.94), and Arizona (5.98).

Overall, the average size of an American man’s penis at full erection is 6.41 inches – an inch ahead of the 5.1-5.5 inch global average.

It is worth remembering that these collated figures have been self-reported by men, and therefore, it is fair to say that these numbers are likely to be somewhat inflated. After all, it wouldn’t be the first time that a guy has made outlandish claims about the size of their junk.

But the study even tracked the states where men were most likely to lie about what they’re packing down below, with some even underestimating their size by a considerable amount, with even worse news for men in Delaware.

Survey respondents in Louisiana exaggerated the most, reporting a size of around eight inches, 0.92 inches above their actual length, when telling others what their size is.

In 5.22-inch Delaware, men are going around claiming an average size of 6.52 inches. But then, you can’t really blame them.

Surprisingly, 12 states reported stating penis sizes under their actual, with men in Rhode Island actually understating their length by 1.17 inches.

If you are wondering about the size of what you have in your pants, Bespoke Surgery has a handy guide if you want to see how you measure up against their self-reported survey.

They say: “Position a ruler or measuring tape at the base of your erect penis, pressing down gently through your pubic hair or excess skin to touch the pubic bone underneath.

“Measure from the base of your penis to the end of its tip. Don‘t pull or stretch your penis – hold it gently against the ruler if you need to.

“Repeat this two or three times over the course of a couple days, and take the average to get your penis length. Blood flow, health and other conditions can change the length of an erection.”
