Nick Reiner speaks just three words in court after arrest for murder of his parents

Nick Reiner, the son of legendary filmmaker Rob Reiner, appeared in a Los Angeles courtroom this week for the first time since being arrested in connection with the deaths of his parents.

The hearing was brief but heavily scrutinized, marking the public’s first look at Reiner as the criminal case against him formally moves forward.
The 32-year-old’s appearance lasted only minutes and focused largely on procedural matters rather than the details of the allegations.

Reiner did not enter a plea, and attorneys on both sides agreed to delay his arraignment until early January. The judge also addressed logistical issues related to courtroom security and scheduling, underscoring how early the case remains in the legal process.

Due to the high-profile nature of the case, the court granted a defense request to prohibit photography and video recording during the hearing. The decision was made to preserve courtroom order and fairness as the case develops.

Outside the courtroom, reporters and members of the public gathered quietly, reflecting the intense interest surrounding the shocking deaths of Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele Singer Reiner.

It was during a short exchange with the judge that Nick Reiner spoke for the first and only time in court. Asked whether he would waive his right to a speedy trial, he replied simply: “Yes, your honor.” Those three words were the only verbal response he offered throughout the entire proceeding.

Observers noted that Reiner remained largely expressionless during the hearing, standing behind glass and restrained as the judge worked through the agenda. He wore a blue suicide-prevention smock, a tear-resistant garment often issued to inmates who are considered at risk of self-harm while in custody. The appearance added to the somber tone of the hearing, which concluded quickly.

Reiner is facing two counts of first-degree murder in connection with the deaths of his parents, Rob Reiner, 78, and Michele Singer Reiner, 70. Prosecutors have also alleged a special circumstance involving multiple murders, which could significantly increase potential penalties if he is convicted. Los Angeles County District Attorney Nathan Hochman has said his office has not yet decided whether it will seek the death penalty.

After the hearing, Reiner’s attorney, Alan Jackson, addressed reporters outside the courthouse. He described the situation as a devastating tragedy for the Reiner family and urged the public not to rush to judgment. Jackson emphasized that the case involves complex legal and factual issues that will require careful examination as it proceeds through the court system.

Authorities allege the killings occurred early Sunday morning. Reiner was arrested later that day near the University of Southern California campus after investigators located him several miles from the family’s Brentwood home. Video from the arrest shows him raising his hands as officers approached.

As the case now moves toward a January arraignment, it continues to send shockwaves through Hollywood and beyond. For now, Reiner’s first court appearance offered only a stark and minimal glimpse into what is expected to be a long and closely watched legal battle.
