However, recent months had seen the actor engulfed in controversy. In June, he was involved in a high-profile drink-driving scandal that made national headlines. The case had been forwarded to prosecutors, awaiting indictment. As a result, Song was dropped from two major drama productions and removed from a stage adaptation of Shakespeare in Love.
Song Young-kyu began his acting career in 1994 with the children’s musical Wizard Mureul. Over time, he became one of the country’s most respected performers, with standout roles in Baseball Girl, Trick, and Extreme Job—the latter becoming one of South Korea’s highest-grossing films ever.
He gained international recognition more recently through appearances in Narco-Saints on Netflix and Big Bet on Disney+, both released in 2022. But his career took a downturn after his DUI incident, with even pre-recorded projects limiting his screen time.
Police later confirmed that Song had driven approximately five kilometers with a blood alcohol level of 0.08%—above South Korea’s legal limit. In a society where celebrities are held to high standards, such incidents often result in severe professional fallout.
