According to new research, Brits are having sex around 57 times a year, or just under 1.1 times a week. But like we say, take that with a pinch of salt.
British sex-positive retailer Lovehoney wanted to go deeper to discover which generation was getting laid on the regular – Boomers, Generation X, Millennials, or Generation Z.
The results are in, and you may be surprised to hear where Gen Z comes in the list, with a spokesperson claiming they’re facing something called an ‘intimacy crisis’.
How much each generation have sex per year
The research claims that Boomers, who are likely born between 1946 and 1964, are apparently having sex 47 times per year. That works out at 0.9 times a week.
Latchkey kids, also known as Generation X, are reportedly getting freaky 1.2 times a week. That means people aged between 45 and 60 years old are likely bonking around 62 times per year.
According to the Lovehoney survey, Generation X’s younger counterparts, Millennials, are having sex a little more frequently than their predecessors.
The 27 to 43-year-olds topped the poll, typically having sex 73 times a year, or 1.4 times a week.
And last, but not least, is surprisingly Generation Z. The tech-savvy generation, thought to be aged 18 to 26, has sex 0.7 times a week.
So if the sex toy gurus have done their maths right, then they’re doing the deed an average of 36 times a year.
Party-loving youngsters having sex less frequently than their nans who religiously tune into EastEnders may really surprise some people.
But there must be a reason why Gen Z is at the bottom of the list, right?
Why Gen Z may be having less sex
Well, it may have something to do with the home-ownership rate remaining low among the age bracket.
According to the Institute for Fiscal Studies, just 39 percent of people aged 34 and under own their own abode.
There are myriad reasons for this, the primary one being that average house prices are now almost six times higher than they were 30 years ago, according to land registry data in England.
And, because the average salary has barely doubled in that time, a huge horde of young people just cannot afford to get on the property ladder.
They’re instead choosing to remain in their childhood bedrooms for as long as possible.
And let’s be honest – whose ideal situation is getting it on while their parents are in the next room?
Speaking to The Sun, one Gen Zer confirmed that it was ‘hard’ for their peer group to find anywhere for a ‘bit of peace and quiet’.
“My parents both moved out when they were 18 or 19, and my grandparents around the same ages, so they had the freedom to do what they liked,” they lamented.
“It’s just not the same with our generation – which is pretty unfair really.”
A spokesperson for Lovehoney has said that because of their unique living situations, Gen Z is facing an ‘intimacy crisis’.
“They are often embarrassed to have sex when their parents are in the house,” they added.
Experts reveal how to have more sex
If you’re someone who doesn’t live with caregivers and is still struggling to connect sexually with your partner, then experts at WebMD may have some solutions.
For a healthy sex life, the specialists suggest sharing your most intimate fantasies and desires, spicing things up by trying different sex positions, and physically putting sexy time into your calendar.
Moreover, it’s advised that anyone suffering from a low libido try some exercise to put them in the mood, as well as relaxing using deep breathing techniques or meditation.
