By 1970, Hayes, a divorced father of five, joined the cast of Days of Our Lives, a decision that defined his career. It was on set where he met Susan Seaforth, who played Julie Williams. Their on-screen chemistry blossomed into a real-life romance, and they married in 1974, remaining together until his passing.
The couple’s connection was evident to everyone, including the show’s head writer, who rewrote their characters’ storylines based on their undeniable chemistry. In 2018, Hayes and Seaforth received Lifetime Achievement Awards at the Daytime Emmys for their lasting contributions to television.
A representative from Days of Our Lives expressed sadness over Hayes’ passing, honoring his five-decade-long role as Doug Williams. Executive producer Ken Corday called Hayes the “heart and soul” of the show.
In addition to Days of Our Lives, Hayes had notable appearances in Matlock and Frasier, and featured in TV adaptations of musicals like Kiss Me, Kate.
The cause of Hayes’ death has not been made public.
