The house was quiet, the kind of stillness that only came late at night. I was in the kitchen, wiping down the counters for the third time when I heard footsteps behind me.
“Mom,” Ryan’s voice was soft, hesitant. “You still up? Why?”
I turned to find him leaning against the doorway, barefoot, hands shoved into the pockets of his sweatpants. His hair was slightly damp from his shower, sticking up in uneven tufts. He still dried it the same careless way he had as a kid.
“Couldn’t sleep,” I admitted. “So, I thought I’d clean the kitchen. What about you?”
“Same,” he exhaled a small, nervous laugh. “But I wasn’t about to clean. I took a shower, thinking it might help.”
I gestured toward the fridge.
“Ice cream?”
His lips twitched.
“We still have the good kind?”
“Excuse me, sir,” I said, grinning. “Like your mother would have anything else? Do you even have to ask?”
I grabbed the tub of chocolate fudge brownie ice cream, holding it up.
“Good enough for you, kid?”
He grinned, taking out two spoons from the cupboard.
We settled at the kitchen table, each armed with a spoon, passing the tub back and forth.
“She’s really special, Mom,” Ryan said after a moment, his voice quieter now. “The girl I’m dating, I mean. I just got off a call with her.”
“I can tell,” I smiled. “You’ve been buzzing lately. I’m glad you’re happy. It’s difficult to find your person before your thirties. Especially when you’re still in college.”
He laughed, shaking his head.
“I don’t know what it is… but it’s different with Sophie. I care about her. Not just in a dating way, but like… I want her to be part of my world, you know?”
Ryan had always been independent, never one to wear his heart on his sleeve. Seeing him like this, soft, open, and vulnerable, made my chest ache in the best way.
“She’s lucky to have you,” I said, reaching over to squeeze his hand. “When am I going to meet her?”
“I’m thinking… tomorrow?” he said hopefully. “But no sappy stuff when she gets here.”
I laughed, tossing a napkin at him.
“Fine, but I’m really excited to meet her.”
“You’re going to love her. The only weird thing about her is that she loves Brussels sprouts. With bacon,” he grinned.And in that moment, he looked so young. So sure.
I didn’t know that by this time tomorrow, his entire world, our entire world, would shatter.
The following day, I spent most of the afternoon preparing a grand meal just for Sophie. I made all of Ryan’s favorites, making sure that I had Sophie’s Brussels sprouts, too. I wanted everything to be perfect because I knew how much this moment meant to him.
“She’s special, Mom. I just know you’ll love her.”
And I did.
From the moment Sophie walked in, she was lovely. A beautiful, polite, sweet, and maybe a little shy girl. She helped me carry dishes to the table without being asked, she complimented the décor, gave tummy rubs to our dog, and even laughed at my attempt to embarrass Ryan with his baby pictures.
For the first thirty minutes, everything was perfect.
Then, she saw the photo.
It was just a framed picture on the shelf. One of the few I had of all three of us together. Ryan, my husband Thomas, and me. It had been taken last year on vacation, a rare moment when Thomas wasn’t working or traveling.
Sophie’s entire face changed.
Her posture went rigid, her smile vanishing so fast it was as if someone had flipped a switch.
Her fingers trembled slightly as she placed her fork down.
“Sweetheart, are you okay? Did you eat something you shouldn’t have?” I asked.
Sophie swallowed, glancing between Ryan and me as if debating something.
Then, she took a deep breath.
“I’m so sorry… but I need to tell you something.”
A strange coldness settled over me.
Sophie turned to Ryan, her hands gripping the edge of the table.
“This man…” she pointed to my husband in the photo, her voice shaking. “I know him.”
Ryan let out a confused laugh.
“Yeah! That’s my dad! I’m sorry you haven’t had a chance to meet him yet. But he’s always working. It’s usually just Mom and me.”
Sophie’s eyes filled with tears.
“No, you don’t understand. Ryan…”
A pit formed in my stomach.
“What, Sophie? What’s going on?” Ryan asked her.
She looked at me, her voice breaking.
“He’s been having an affair with my mother. For the past four years…”
The room spun.
I gripped the edge of the table, trying to make sense of the words.
“No,” I murmured. “That… that’s not possible. It can’t be!”
Sophie shook her head.
“I swear to you, Laura,” she said. “I didn’t know. I don’t think my mom knows that he’s married either. She would never date a married man!”
My pulse roared in my ears.
“His name is Thomas?” she asked.
“He… he wouldn’t. Surely not. Sophie, thank you for telling me, honey. But I’m sure you’ve gotten it wrong…”
My heart sank.
But even as I said those words, I thought of the countless business trips. The late nights. The times he came home smelling like a different brand of shampoo.
Sophie’s next words shattered me completely.
“He lives with us…” she said slowly. “He goes on work trips and all that, but he always comes back.”
I gasped.
Ryan shot up from his chair.
“What the hell are you talking about, Sophie?”
“Ryan,” I warned.
We were both completely shocked, yes. But it wasn’t a reason to shout at Sophie.
“He’s been staying at our house. He comes and goes, but my mom… she thinks that they’re building a life together. She thinks that he’s going to marry her. He says it all the time, too.”
The air vanished from the room.
Then, as if I weren’t already drowning, she said something else.
“And… Mom is pregnant.”
Silence.
A thick silence took over the room.
The candle flickered between us, the only sign that time hadn’t frozen completely.
Ryan’s chair screeched against the floor as he backed away. His face twisted in horror, his hands tugging at his hair.
“No. No, that’s… This is insane,” he said.
My son turned to me, desperate.
“Mom, say something.”
I stared at the picture on the wall, my vision blurring.
Twenty years of marriage. Twenty years of us. All gone.
Burned down in an instant.
Slowly, I inhaled. Then, I stood up.
“Where?” I asked, my voice eerily calm.
“What?” Sophie asked, wiping her eyes.
“Where do you live, sweetheart?” I asked.
“You… you want to go to my house?” she asked, speaking slowly.
“Yes,” I said, already grabbing my coat.
Ryan’s face darkened.
“I’m coming with you,” he said.
“Me too,” Sophie said. “I’m so sorry.”
And so we went.
The drive felt surreal.
Sophie sat in the passenger seat, giving me directions as we went along, her hands constantly fidgeting in her lap. Ryan was in the back, his knee bouncing restlessly.
My knuckles were white against the steering wheel.
When we pulled up to the house, I felt like I was staring into another life.
It was a charming home. A cozy little place with a white picket fence and a warm porch light glowing in the dusk.
Thomas had built a whole life here.
I killed the engine. My breath came slow and steady, but inside, I was a hurricane.
Sophie hesitated
“Are you sure about this?”
I stepped out of the car.
“Oh, absolutely,” I said.
With each step toward the door, my pulse steadied. The anger burned away the shock, leaving only icy determination. I rang the bell.
Footsteps.
Then, the door opened.
Thomas stood there, fresh from the shower, a towel slung around his neck. He smiled. Actually smiled.
Until he realized it was me.
His face drained of color.
“Laura,” he choked out.
I crossed my arms.
“So, what kind of business trip did you have this time, Thomas?”
His jaw clenched.
“I… I can explain.”
“Perfect,” I said smoothly, stepping inside. “I was hoping you’d say that. Because Ryan and I decided that it was time for me to meet his girlfriend. And when we were getting to know each other, she mentioned you. So, I hope you have an explanation ready.”
Sophie and Ryan stood awkwardly behind me. Sophie looked like she wanted to cry again. Ryan looked as though he wanted to punch Thomas.
And then, from the hallway, a voice called out.
“Thomas? Who’s at the door? Is Soph home?”
A woman appeared—mid-forties, attractive, confused. Pregnant.
Sophie stiffened behind me.
“Mom,” she whispered.
Her mother looked between us, her confusion turning to concern.
Then, she glanced at Thomas.
“Honey, what’s going on? Who is this?”
Thomas squeezed his eyes shut, like he could will himself out of this.
I turned to the woman and smiled.
“Hi,” I said. “I’m Laura. Thomas’s wife. Ryan’s mother.”
Her face crumbled, and she clutched her stomach.
She let out a ragged breath and took a shaky step back.
“No. No. No! That’s not possible. Thomas said that he had never married! That work was too important all his life. But he didn’t want to be a single man married to his work only…”
“Single?” I echoed. “Yeah, I’m sure he’s pretty good at behaving like he’s single. Or is he devoted to you?”
Tears welled in her eyes.
“Oh my God,” she said.
And just like that, Thomas’s entire world collapsed.
Sophie spoke first, her voice trembling with betrayal.
“You promised my mom a future. You told her that you’d marry her. And that you’d always be here for us and the baby! And all this time… you lied?”
Thomas ignored her and turned to me.
“Laura, please. I never meant…”
I held up a hand.
“You don’t get to speak.”
I turned to Ryan, whose fists were clenched at his sides, his entire body shaking.
I softened immediately.
“Baby,” I whispered.
His chest rose and fell rapidly. Then, he looked at his father, the man he had idolized for most of his life.
And his voice, broken and raw, cut through the silence.
“You’re dead to me.”
I turned back to Sophie’s mother.
“I suggest you kick him out,” I said simply. “Because as of right now? He’s your problem.”
Then, I turned back to Thomas, meeting his panicked gaze.
“I’ll be filing for divorce. And you better return my grandfather’s ring. I thought you were special enough to use it. But you’re just a pathetic excuse for a man. I hope to God that this child is more forgiving because your son is done with you. As am I.”
He opened his mouth, maybe to beg, maybe to lie. I didn’t care.
Because I was already walking away.
To my surprise, Sophie followed Ryan and me to the car.
“Please,” she said. “Just let me come for a few hours while they figure it out… when they argue, it can get loud.”
“Come on, sweetheart,” I said. “I still have dessert waiting.”
She smiled sadly and got into the car.
When we got home, the three of us sat in silence.
The house felt heavier than before, as if the weight of the truth had settled into the walls, pressing down on us.
Ryan sat on the couch, looking lost and confused. Sophie was sitting next to him. She looked like she was hidden in her own world.
They weren’t touching. They weren’t even looking at each other.
“I’m going to bring dessert,” I said. “I know that nobody has an appetite. But my mother always said to eat something sweet when you’re upset. It helps keep the nerves at bay. So, chocolate cake and ice cream?”
“Mom,” Ryan sighed, looking at me.
My son looked at me for a moment before he nodded slowly.
“Okay, dessert it is.”
I cut into the cake, imagining that I was releasing my frustration. Then, I spooned ice cream into bowls.
When I returned, the kids were still in the same spots.
I sat across from them in the armchair, just watching.
The night had been long. Too long. And now, finally, we were just sitting. The anger had burned down, leaving only exhaustion and the smoldering remains of what once was.
Ryan exhaled sharply, breaking the silence.
“I guess you’re wondering why I never showed you a picture of him.”
Sophie didn’t answer right away. She just kept her eyes on the floor, waiting.
Ryan let out a dry laugh, shaking his head.
“I was never close to him,” he admitted. “Not really. He was there, sure. But he was always working, always traveling, always… somewhere else. I stopped expecting anything from him a long time ago.”
He paused, taking his slice of cake.
“I guess that’s why it never crossed my mind to show you a picture. He was just… a name, not a presence.”
Sophie nodded slowly, as if she understood that feeling all too well.
“I was never sure about him either. I knew my mom was happy. Happier than she’d been in a long time. But it wasn’t enough for me. Because it wasn’t him.”
Ryan didn’t ask who she meant. He already knew.
“My dad,” Sophie whispered, finally looking up. “I just wanted him to come back home.”
Something in Ryan’s face softened.
And suddenly, I saw them. Not as a couple tangled in a mess neither of them had created but as two kids who had both been left behind.
Neither of them spoke after that.
They just sat there, side by side, saying everything in their silence.
And I sat across from them, watching, breathing… grieving what we had lost.
