We’re talking about Dave Edmunds, the 81-year-old rock legend of the 1970s, best known for his Christmas No. 1 hit “I Hear You Knocking” in 1970. His wife, Cici, shared the heartbreaking news in an emotional Facebook post, describing how her beloved husband “died in her arms” — only to be revived by medics in a dramatic rescue.
She explained how she tried to save him by clearing his airways before a nurse arrived and began intensive CPR. At one point, the nurse declared him dead—but Cici refused to give up. Miraculously, Dave’s heart started beating again.
Now, he remains in critical condition, intubated in the hospital. Cici says he has “clearly” suffered brain damage and memory loss and is at high risk of another cardiac event. She also shared how the experience has left her traumatized, saying, “I believe I have PTSD from the horrific experience.”
“My brilliant, talented, funny and special Dave really needs as many prayers and good wishes as possible,” she wrote.
Cici’s post was quickly flooded with messages of love and support from fans around the world.
Born in Cardiff, Dave Edmunds became a household name in the 1970s and early ’80s with hits like “Slipping Away,” “The Promised Land,” and “Girls Talk.” Throughout his career, he was part of multiple bands, most notably Love Sculpture, whose 1968 cover of “Sabre Dance” became a UK Top 5 hit and even drew praise from legendary DJ John Peel.
As a solo artist, Dave went on to achieve massive success with “I Hear You Knocking,” a cover of Smiley Lewis’ classic that sold over three million copies and reached No. 4 in the U.S.
