That child was Joaquin Phoenix, born in San Juan, Puerto Rico, in 1974 as the third of five children of John Lee and Arlyn Bottom. His parents had joined a religious group known as the Children of God, taking their young family with them as they traveled through South America.
Life inside the movement was far removed from a typical childhood. The family lived with little money, moving frequently and relying partly on donations. Children were involved in the group’s missionary activities, including distributing religious literature and collecting contributions in public places.
Phoenix has later described his parents’ decision with more nuance than the dramatic headlines surrounding his childhood might suggest. He said they genuinely believed they had found a community that shared their religious ideals. Eventually, however, they became disillusioned with the organization and decided to leave.
By the late 1970s, the family returned to the United States and attempted to begin again. They also abandoned their original surname, Bottom, and adopted Phoenix — an appropriate symbol for a family trying to rise from the ashes of its old life.
Starting over wasn’t glamorous. The family had little money, but the children possessed an unusual talent for performing. Joaquin and his siblings sang, played music and eventually caught the attention of people in the entertainment industry.
Joaquin initially performed under the name “Leaf,” following the nature-inspired names of some of his siblings. Small television appearances eventually led to film roles, and it became increasingly clear that the quiet boy from an unconventional family possessed remarkable screen presence.
His older brother River Phoenix became a major young Hollywood star first. But in 1993, tragedy struck when River died at just 23. The loss deeply affected the family and Joaquin temporarily stepped away from acting.
When he returned, his career entered an entirely new chapter. Instead of chasing easy celebrity, Phoenix built a reputation for intense, unpredictable performances. Roles in Gladiator, Walk the Line, Her and The Master established him as one of the most respected actors of his generation.
Then came the role that pushed his fame even further: Arthur Fleck in Joker. His transformation earned worldwide attention and ultimately brought him the Academy Award for Best Actor.
