The man who died was Glen Hansard — the Irish singer, songwriter, musician and actor who won an Academy Award. His management confirmed the artist’s death on July 29. Hansard was 56.
According to police, the crash occurred at approximately 4:30 a.m. on the R109 Lower Road in the Strawberry Beds area near Lucan. It was reported to be a single-vehicle collision involving a motorcycle. Emergency crews treated him at the scene, but he was later pronounced dead.
For many, Hansard will forever remain one of the defining voices and faces of a remarkable era in Irish music. He was the frontman of the rock band The Frames, while international audiences also came to know him through The Swell Season and his work in film.
Early in his career, the musician appeared in the film The Commitments, but his major international breakthrough came with the independent musical drama Once. The film ultimately brought Hansard and Markéta Irglová one of Hollywood’s highest honors.
In 2008, the pair won the Academy Award for Best Original Song for Falling Slowly. The modest independent film became an unexpected international success, and its story later reached the stage, with the Broadway adaptation of Once winning eight Tony Awards.
Hansard continued his solo career, releasing albums and performing on stages around the world. His album Didn’t He Ramble received a Grammy nomination. Beyond music, the artist was also known for his charitable work and support for people experiencing homelessness.
Following news of the tragedy, tributes began pouring in from musicians, cultural figures and public representatives in Ireland. His death came as an especially sudden shock to the music world, as Hansard had been discussing new music and future performances only months earlier.
Glen Hansard is survived by his wife, Maire Saaritsa, and their son, Christy. From performing on the streets of Dublin to standing on the Academy Awards stage, Hansard built an extraordinary career and leaves behind music that reached audiences far beyond Ireland.
