Unconfirmed reports indicated that Narcan, a medication used to reverse opioid overdoses, was present at the residence, though officials have not confirmed whether it was administered. Panettiere had traveled to South Carolina from Los Angeles with her on-and-off partner Brian Hickerson the day before the incident.
Following the news, Panettiere’s father released a public statement expressing the family’s deep grief. “It is with profound sadness that we share the tragic passing of our beloved Hayden. She was an incredible light and a force of nature who brought immeasurable love and joy to all who knew her — and to the millions who watched her onscreen. We ask for privacy as our family takes time to process this unimaginable loss.”
Personal history and struggles
Panettiere previously discussed her past challenges with substance abuse, postpartum depression, and the pressures of early fame. In a 2022 interview, she recalled being introduced to substances as a teenager. “They were to make me peppy during interviews,” she said. “I had no idea that this was not an appropriate thing, or what door that would open for me when it came to my addiction.”
Her personal difficulties led to her sending her daughter, Kaya, to live with the child’s father, former boxing champion Wladimir Klitschko, in 2018.
Speaking about that period, Panettiere said, “It wasn’t a decision I made lightly, nor was it a decision I even wanted to make.” She added, “I was going through a really challenging time in my life… I knew I needed to be able to put her first so that I could get the help I needed and be the mom she needed me to be.”

He emphasized his commitment to their daughter, stating, “Hayden was, although no longer my partner, an important part of my life and the mother of our daughter, Kaya. To our daughter Kaya, I will always speak of her mother with respect and make sure she remembers the person she was.”
