The Tragedy of Vigilante Marianne Bachmeier

The Tragedy of Vigilante Marianne Bachmeier

In the spring of 1981, the German city of Lübeck was living its usual, almost sleepy life as a provincial center of West Germany. Universities were discussing a new wave of feminism, newspapers were writing about upcoming elections and demonstrations against the deployment of American missiles, while children played football in the streets between parked Volkswagens.

But for several weeks, the eyes of the entire world turned toward this city. In a local courtroom, a drama unfolded that would forever remain in history as one of the most notorious examples of vigilante justice in Europe.

Marianne Bachmeier became one of the most controversial vigilantes after she shot and killed her daughter’s murderer inside the district court in Lübeck.
