Following his death, Seyfried commented on Kirk’s political stance on an Instagram post which addressed his views on abortion, immigration, LGBTQIA+ rights, and other contentious topics, where she wrote in the comments: “He was hateful.”
The Mean Girls star also shared a post on her social media, which some interpreted to be in relation to Kirk’s death.
The post featured a quote which read: “You can’t invite violence to the dinner table and be shocked when it starts eating.”
Now, responding to the backlash surrounding her earlier comment and repost, Seyfried clarified her intentions.
Taking to Instagram, she posted a statement with the caption: “I don’t want to add fuel to a fire. I just want to be able to give clarity to something so irresponsibly (but understandably) taken out of context. Spirited discourse- isn’t that what we should be having?”
The statement read: “We’re forgetting the nuance of humanity. I can get angry about misogyny and racist rhetoric and ALSO very much agree that Charlie Kirk’s murder was absolutely disturbing and deplorable in every way imaginable.
“No one should have to experience this level of violence. This country is grieving too many senseless and violent deaths and shootings.
“Can we agree on that at least?”
Seyfried isn’t the only celebrity to have received criticism for her remarks following Kirk’s death.
Batman’s Michael Keaton faced some backlash for commenting on the ‘irony’ of Kirk being killed by a gun after his previous statements against gun control.
“Before we start to get into the meat of this thing, I’m going to take a minute to say that, regardless of how I probably — not probably — have disagreed with many things he said, Charlie Kirk leaves behind two kids and a wife,” he said at the start of his speech,” the actor said.
“Because in the end, shooting people will never answer anything, and the irony that he was killed with a gun is unbelievable.”
Meanwhile, Ava Raine, who is the daughter of WWE legend Dwayne Johnson, received a bit of heat online for sharing a post that some interpreted as a response to Kirk’s death.
