With traditional labels no longer a ‘one-size-fits-all’ situation, nebulasexuality gives people – particularly those who are neurodivergent – a way to describe the foggy, hard-to-define experience of figuring out what kind of attraction they’re actually feeling.
While the term has been floating around online for years, it’s only recently started gaining mainstream traction, thanks to social media platforms like Reddit, which has become a safe space for people to unpack what it means to them.
One Reddit user shared: “I’ve been questioning for years because I could never tell if what I was feeling was actually attraction or just… something else? Finding the term nebulasexual was like finally having words for this fog I’ve been living in.”
Another explained: “As someone with ADHD, my brain processes everything differently. I might think someone is attractive, but whether that’s sexual, aesthetic, or just my brain hyperfixating on their features? No clue. Nebulasexual fits perfectly.”
The experiences often tie in with intrusive thoughts, sensory overload, or blurred emotional lines, making it hard to distinguish different kinds of attraction.
“The intrusive thoughts make it so hard to know what’s ME and what’s just my brain being chaotic,” a third user noted.
“This label helps me feel less broken and more understood.”
A new flag has even been created for those to fly at pride, and it’s inspired by the Crab Nebula – a picturesque orange, white, and green supernova remnant that was discovered in the 19th century.
The flag resembles the same color, and was designed by a Tumblr user back in 2020.
“I love the nebulasexual flag!” a user commented. “The colors really capture that ‘cloudy’ feeling of not being sure about attraction.”
Nebulasexuality falls under the quoi/ace spectrum, centering on the difficulty of labeling attraction rather than the absence of it.
For many, finding this label isn’t about confusion, but instead, its about identifying with language that matches them as a person.
