OK, it may be an inherently awkward conversation, but you can’t hide from it: thousands of people find themselves in the hospital after getting some kind of object stuck up their backside.
It’s not actually too niche an occurrence, given that from 2012 to 2021, about 38,948 people were hospitalised with foreign objects in their rectum each year, according to the American Journal of Emergency Medicine. As per the journal, the average patient age was 43, and 78% were male, if you were curious.
And, if you find yourself still curious when it comes to the subject of foreign objects stuck up your bum, you may be keen on finding out the weirdest and worst things that have been found up there.
Whether it happens as a result of sex stuff, following bizarre internet advice or just plain boredom, you may be surprised to know that the US Consumer Product Safety Commission actually keeps a database of Emergency Room (ER) visits and what’s bringing people in.
Yep, plain and simple, the US government has a sizeable (but anonymous, don’t worry) list of every time a patient has come in with something up their rear end.
