Every night, we check the doors, turn off the lights, and put our phones on charge. But one familiar item in the kitchen is often overlooked — and it could become a source of danger.
Many people do not even think about it: the appliance may look completely turned off, make no noise, and show no signs of working. But inside, there can sometimes be a hidden risk that people only remember when it is too late.
It becomes especially dangerous when napkins, towels, packaging, or crumbs are left nearby or inside after daily use. At night, while everyone is sleeping, even a small detail can lead to serious consequences.
We are talking about the toaster — one of the most common kitchen appliances that many people leave plugged in around the clock. At first glance, it seems completely harmless: small, simple, and used only for a few minutes in the morning. But because it feels so ordinary, people often underestimate it.

The main problem with a toaster is the leftover bread crumbs inside. Crumbs collect at the bottom, near the heating elements, and sometimes they can burn even after short use. If the appliance is old, has a damaged cord, or a faulty mechanism, the risk becomes even higher.
Fire safety experts advise not leaving small kitchen appliances plugged in when they are not needed, especially overnight or when no one is home. This applies to more than just the toaster, but the toaster is often considered risky because it combines heat, dry crumbs, and flammable items nearby.
Another common mistake is placing the toaster under wall cabinets or near curtains, paper towels, and plastic bags. If something inside begins to overheat, flames can quickly spread to nearby objects. And at night, a person may not notice the smell of smoke right away.
To reduce the risk, it is enough to develop one simple habit: unplug the toaster after using it. It is also worth cleaning the crumb tray regularly, avoiding any appliance with a damaged cord, and never leaving it running unattended, even for a few minutes.
This does not mean you need to be afraid of your toaster. But it should not be treated as a completely safe item that can stay plugged in all the time. One simple action before going to bed — pulling the plug from the outlet — could help protect your home from a serious disaster.
