TV star reveals he has been diagnosed with ALS

For several months, those close to the TV star sensed that something was wrong. Small changes began to appear quietly — a dropped glass, a strange weakness, moments that were easy to dismiss.

At first, he believed stress might be to blame. The pandemic, years without steady work, and the pressure of industry strikes had taken a heavy toll on his body and mind.

Then the symptoms became harder to ignore. Twitches, nerve sensations, and loss of mobility left him wondering if he had suffered a stroke or was dealing with a serious neck problem.

Now, actor Russell Andrews, known for his roles in Better Call Saul and Straight Outta Compton, has revealed that he has been diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, commonly known as ALS.

The 64-year-old actor shared the diagnosis during an emotional appearance on CNN’s The Story Is with Elex Michaelson. Speaking openly about his condition, Andrews said he was diagnosed in the late fall of last year after months of confusing and worrying symptoms.

“I am a person living with ALS,” he said, describing the moment that changed his life and forced him to face a future he had never expected.

Andrews explained that the first signs appeared gradually. He began dropping cups and glasses at night. At times, he felt strange sensations moving through his arm. He initially thought the problem might be linked to pinched nerves in his neck, especially after a long period of stress and uncertainty in the entertainment industry.

During the actors’ strike, Andrews temporarily lost his insurance, which delayed his ability to seek medical help. Once he was able to see a doctor, the situation quickly became more serious. According to him, within minutes, his primary care physician recommended that he see a neurologist.

ALS is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord. Over time, it can lead to loss of muscle control and increasing physical limitations. There is currently no cure for the condition.

During the interview, Andrews was supported by his fiancée, actress Erica Tazel, who made it clear that the diagnosis has not changed her commitment to him. She said that once they finally understood what was happening, she told him she still wanted to be his wife.

Andrews, a father of two, also spoke about the support he has received from the nonprofit ALS Network. He said the organization has surrounded him with care, guidance, and a sense of community during one of the most difficult periods of his life.

His announcement comes months after Grey’s Anatomy star Eric Dane also publicly revealed his ALS diagnosis, bringing renewed attention to the disease and the people living with it.

For Andrews, the road ahead is uncertain, but his message was clear: he is facing the diagnosis with honesty, support, and the determination to keep moving forward.
