At first, it seemed like nothing serious. A small trace of red wax near the front door lock — as if someone had accidentally touched the door with a candle or left a strange stain after some kind of repair. The woman wiped it off with a napkin and did not think much of it.
But a few days later, the wax appeared again. Almost in the exact same place. This time, the mark was more noticeable — a red line ran around the metal part of the lock, as if it had been placed there on purpose. That was when her mother-in-law, who sometimes visited her after her son passed away, began to worry.
The woman lived alone. After losing her husband, she was trying to return to normal life, but now even her own front door started to feel unsettling. None of the relatives knew where the wax could have come from. The neighbors had not seen anything suspicious either, although one of them mentioned noticing an unfamiliar man near the entrance in the evening.
At first, everyone tried to find a simple explanation. Maybe it was a child’s prank. Maybe someone had been carrying a candle. Maybe the mark was accidental. But one detail made the situation harder to ignore: the wax appeared again after it had been completely removed.
And that is where things became more serious. In similar cases, red wax on a door lock is sometimes seen as a possible marker. One theory is that it may be used to check whether someone is using the door or to mark an apartment that is being watched. If the wax stays there for a long time, it may suggest that no one is home. If it disappears, it means someone regularly enters.
This does not mean that every case is connected to crime. But such a sign should not be ignored, especially when a person lives alone and the strange mark appears more than once.
The first thing to do is not to panic, but to take photos of everything. Then it is worth carefully checking the door, the lock, the windows, the entrance area, or the yard: look for scratches, other marks, glue traces, threads, or any signs of damage. It is also a good idea to speak with neighbors and ask whether they have seen any suspicious people nearby.
If the wax appears again, it is better to contact the police or at least a local officer, and also consider installing a camera or video doorbell. In situations like this, the most important thing is not panic, but a quick and careful response.
Because sometimes a small red mark on a lock may be just a coincidence. But sometimes, it may be a warning that should be noticed in time.
