Who was Hayden Panettiere?
Panettiere spent almost her entire life in the public eye. She began appearing in commercials as a baby, voiced Dot in Pixar’s A Bug’s Life as a young child, and starred alongside Denzel Washington in Remember the Titans before she’d even reached her teens.
Her major breakthrough came in 2006, when she was cast as self-healing cheerleader Claire Bennet in NBC’s Heroes. She went on to star in Nashville as country star Juliette Barnes, a performance that earned her two Golden Globe nominations, and later made her horror debut as fan-favorite Kirby Reed in the Scream franchise.
She also spoke openly about her struggles with addiction to op*oids and alcohol as a teenager, describing a cycle in which reaching one low point would often lead to another.
The birth of her daughter in 2014 was also traumatic. Panettiere later recalled feeling as though she was ‘knocking on death’s door’ after haemorrhaging during her C-section. She subsequently experienced severe postpartum depression and struggled with alcohol and prescription medication.
Following her brother’s death in 2023, Panettiere said her grief affected her both physically and mentally. Her 2026 memoir, This Is Me: A Reckoning, was released just months before her death and explored her childhood, relationships and experiences with addiction, trauma and recovery.
Away from the spotlight, friends and former co-stars knew her as warm and open. She spoke honestly about some of the lowest points in her life, rarely shying away from the more difficult parts of her story.
Fans and co-stars pay tribute
News of Panettiere’s death has prompted an outpouring of grief across the industry.
SAG-AFTRA, of which she’d been a member since childhood, remembered her long career and extended sympathy to her daughter, family and fans.
Scream VI co-star Melissa Barrera shared a short tribute online, writing ‘Rest in peace, sweet Hayden,’ while podcast host Jay Shetty, who interviewed Panettiere earlier this year, said he couldn’t believe the news and that their friendship had ‘just begun.’
“She was way too young, and this honestly broke my heart to hear. She deserved SOOOOOO much better than what she got in life,” one devastated fan wrote.
“Us ’90s babies are hurt with this one,” penned another.
A third wrote: “Such a deep loss. May you rest in peace.”
“Fly high, Ice Princesses,” said a fourth, referencing the 2005 Disney film Panettiere starred in alongside Michelle Trachtenberg.
Trachtenberg also passed away, aged just 39, meaning both young stars of the film died within around 18 months of each other.
The difficult decision she made for her daughter
Panettiere is survived by her 11-year-old daughter, Kaya, whom she shared with ex-fiancé and former heavyweight boxing champion Wladimir Klitschko.
The pair got engaged in 2013 and welcomed Kaya the following year, before splitting in 2018.
Around that time, Panettiere was struggling with postpartum depression and addiction, and Kaya went to live with Klitschko. Panettiere later said she hadn’t initially realised the arrangement would become permanent, describing his request for full custody as a shock.
She ultimately signed over custody while focusing on her recovery.
He moved with their daughter to his native Ukraine, leaving Panettiere living a long distance from Kaya while she focused on her recovery.
Panettiere discussed the decision publicly on several occasions. During a 2022 episode of Red Table Talk, she described handing over custody as ‘very upsetting’ and said the timing wasn’t right for her to debate the decision while she was in recovery.
She told PEOPLE that year: “It was the hardest thing I could do, but the best thing for my daughter was to make sure she was okay, take care of myself and make sure I could be a good mom to her.”
She also pushed back against suggestions that she had abandoned Kaya, explaining that the decision had come from a place of love.
Despite the distance, Panettiere often spoke about staying close with her daughter, saying the two made a point of seeing each other whenever possible and describing Kaya as one of the most loving people she’d ever met.
In an interview earlier this year, she spoke about their relationship again and admitted it was a ‘nail-biter’ to watch Kaya begin showing an interest in acting herself.
The loss of her younger brother
Panettiere had also spoken openly about the grief of losing her only sibling, Jansen Panettiere, an actor who died suddenly in February 2023 at the age of 28.
Jansen, five years younger than Hayden, had followed her into acting as a child, appearing in shows including Even Stevens and The X’s before later turning his attention to painting.
He was found dead at his home in New York, with his family later revealing that he had died from cardiomegaly, an enlarged heart, combined with aortic valve complications.
Hayden spoke about the loss in the years that followed, once saying she felt as though she’d lost half of her soul. She also admitted feeling guilty as his older sister for not having been able to protect him.
During her first television interview following his death, on Good Morning America, she became emotional when offered condolences and quietly replied that he was still right there with her.
She later wrote about her brother again in her memoir, sharing memories of their relationship and how long it took for the reality of his death to sink in.
Her final social media post
On July 27, around three weeks before her death, Panettiere shared what would become her final Instagram post: a black-and-white photo of herself with photographer and podcaster Randall Slavin, taken during a night out.
In the image, she’s mid-laugh, sticking her tongue out playfully with her hand on Slavin’s shoulder as he smiles with his arm around her. She captioned it simply: “Good times and good friends.”
At the time, Slavin commented underneath, calling it a good time. Following the news of her death, Slavin reshared the photo to his Instagram Story, writing: ‘Peace be with you, H.’
The photo has become particularly difficult for fans to see following her death.
Panettiere appears happy and relaxed alongside a friend, with no indication that it would be one of her final posts.
Since Sunday, fans have returned to the comments to share their shock and sadness, with many saying the news still doesn’t feel real and others simply wishing her peace.
As tributes continue to flood in beneath Panettiere’s final post, further details have emerged about the circumstances surrounding her death.
According to TMZ, a friend found the actress unresponsive inside a home in Greenville, South Carolina, on Sunday afternoon.
A 911 call was made at around 1:51pm, before emergency crews arrived and attempted to revive Panettiere. She was pronounced dead at 2:32pm.
Authorities said there were no initial signs of foul play and that her death did not appear to be suspicious.
Panettiere’s cause and manner of death have yet to be determined.
