Rippled fingernails reveal secrets of possible disease

Manicures may mask imperfections on your nails, but they can’t conceal potential underlying health issues. Nail changes often reflect internal conditions, including problems with the liver, lungs, or heart. Here’s what different nail stripes might mean and when to seek medical advice.

Types of Nail Stripes and Their Meanings:

Vertical Stripes:
Commonly linked to aging, these stripes run from the cuticle to the tip and are usually harmless. However, they may signal nutritional deficiencies like low levels of vitamin B12, magnesium, or iron. Sudden or pronounced vertical ridges could also indicate anemia or thyroid issues.

Horizontal Stripes (Beau’s Lines):
Grooves across the nails may appear after physical trauma or during severe illnesses, such as diabetes, heart attacks, or respiratory diseases. These ridges result from temporary disruptions in nail growth due to stress or illness. If present on all nails, they might indicate systemic diseases like pneumonia, coronary thrombosis, or syphilis.

White Stripes (Muehrcke’s Lines):
White, parallel horizontal lines that don’t indent the nail surface may suggest kidney or liver problems or low blood protein levels. These stripes often fade when the nail is pressed and are commonly seen in malnutrition or chronic liver disease cases.
