One day, Simon returned home to find Sophie clinging to him, afraid she was being sent away. Claire confirmed it—she wanted to return Sophie. “She’s ruining everything,” Claire complained, citing Sophie’s innocent paint-covered handprints on her wedding dress as the final straw.
Simon was stunned. Claire even accused Sophie of being manipulative. Then came the ultimatum: “Either she goes, or I do.”
Simon didn’t hesitate. “She’s my daughter now,” he said.
Claire stormed out, leaving behind her family.
Three weeks later, Claire requested a meeting, claiming she’d made a mistake and wanted to come home. But Simon couldn’t forget how she had abandoned Sophie, how their daughter cried for her night after night. “You didn’t just leave me,” he said. “You left her.”
Claire begged for forgiveness, but Simon stood firm. “I don’t love you anymore,” he told her. The mediator confirmed reconciliation was off the table.
A year later, Sophie still battles lingering fears—flinching at loud voices, clinging tightly in crowded spaces. But she’s healing. She laughs more, trusts more, and slowly believes in the kind of love that stays.
One night, curled in his arms, Sophie asked, “You won’t leave me, Daddy?”
“Never,” Simon promised.
She exhaled, finally safe. Finally home.
