A good divorce is better than a toxic marriage, but often children suffer most. Shannon Wilfong and Michael Chekevdia married despite constant arguments, hoping a family would bring peace. After their son Ricky was born, tensions worsened, leading to divorce. Shannon was granted custody, but when she denied Michael visitation, he took her to court. On the court date, Shannon and Ricky disappeared.
Authorities searched extensively. Shannon’s mother, Diane Dobbs, accused Michael of abuse and posted signs labeling him an abuser. Though Diane’s home was searched, Shannon and Ricky weren’t found—until two years later. A second search revealed a hidden room behind a dresser where Shannon and Ricky were hiding.
Shannon was arrested for child abduction, Diane for helping her. Shannon claimed Ricky was happy, but neighbors said they never saw the boy. Ultimately, Shannon pleaded guilty, receiving two years’ probation and a fine. Michael regained custody after clearing his name.
