Canada’s new prime minister issues scathing message to Donald Trump moments after being elected

Newly-elected Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney wasted no time addressing President Donald Trump in his first speech after assuming office from Justin Trudeau.

Speaking in Ottawa on April 29, Carney warned: “America wants our land, our resources, our water, our country — never. These are not idle threats. President Trump is trying to break us so that America can own us. That will never happen.”

His comments follow Trump’s repeated taunts, including suggesting Canada should become the 51st U.S. state and calling Trudeau the “Governor of Canada.” Trump claimed the U.S. spends $200 billion annually to subsidize Canada.

Carney emphasized Canada’s sovereignty, saying that when he meets with Trump, it will be “as two sovereign nations” and that Canada has “many other options” to build prosperity beyond the U.S.

He urged unity in facing the crisis and trade tensions with the U.S., stating, “United we will win this trade war and build the strongest economy in the G7 — one that works for everyone.”
