Woman Loses Her Legs Due To Common Household Product, Now She’s Warning Women Everywhere

Lauren Wasser, a 35-year-old model, shared her near-death experience with Toxic Shock Syndrome (TSS) caused by a tampon, leading to the amputation of both her legs. Speaking on The Diary Of A CEO podcast, Wasser described how flu-like symptoms escalated into a heart attack, life support, and gangrene. A wellness check by her mother saved her life, but the damage was irreversible.

At 24, Wasser had turned down a basketball scholarship to pursue modeling. After her ordeal, she spent eight months in a wheelchair, battling depression and suicidal thoughts. Although her left leg was initially spared, unbearable pain later forced its amputation before her 30th birthday.

Now based in Los Angeles, Wasser advocates for transparency in feminine hygiene products. She collaborates with activists and lawmakers like Congresswoman Carolyn Maloney to push for legislation requiring ingredient disclosure on menstrual products.

Despite her challenges, Wasser rebuilt her modeling career, appearing in campaigns for brands like Lacoste and Shiseido. Nicknamed “fashion’s Girl with the Golden Legs,” she uses her platform to raise awareness about TSS, emphasizing the dangers even with rare conditions tied to tampon use.

TSS occurs when skin bacteria enter the bloodstream, producing dangerous toxins. While tampon packaging warns against prolonged use, Wasser’s story highlights the need for even greater caution and public education.
