Why George Clooney’s wife Amal could face ban from the US amid Trump’s controversial new sanctions

Amal Clooney, renowned human rights lawyer and wife of actor George Clooney, may soon face difficulties entering the United States due to her alleged involvement with the International Criminal Court (ICC) investigation into Israel’s conduct in Gaza.

Amal, known for defending high-profile clients like former Ukrainian PM Yulia Tymoshenko and detained Reuters journalists in Myanmar, is reportedly among the legal experts advising the ICC in its case against Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. As a result, she and other UK-based lawyers have been warned by Britain’s Foreign Office that they could face U.S. sanctions.

This warning follows an executive order signed by Donald Trump in February, targeting ICC personnel involved in cases against U.S. allies. The order criticizes the ICC for what it calls “illegitimate and baseless actions” and threatens travel bans and asset freezes for officials and their families.

Though the Clooneys primarily reside in France, they are currently staying in New York while George Clooney stars in a Broadway play. If enforced, the sanctions could impact Amal’s ability to remain in the U.S.

ICC prosecutor Karim Khan was also named in the executive order as subject to potential sanctions.
