Canada’s new prime minister issues scathing warning to Donald Trump

Tensions between the U.S. and Canada are rising as newly elected Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney launched a bold attack on President Donald Trump during his victory speech. Carney, a former banker with no political experience, led the Liberal Party to a surprising comeback, winning the national election and replacing Justin Trudeau as Prime Minister.

Speaking to supporters in Ottawa, Carney warned of growing pressure from the U.S., accusing Trump of trying to “break” Canada to gain control over its land and resources. “America wants our land, our resources, our water, our country – never,” he declared.

The speech followed weeks of escalating tension, including Trump’s controversial suggestion that Canada become the 51st U.S. state and his mockery of Trudeau as “Governor of Canada.” Trump also claimed the U.S. spends $200 billion annually to support Canada, fueling backlash and a surge of Canadian patriotism.

Canadians responded with record early voting and widespread boycotts of U.S. products. Carney vowed to protect Canada’s sovereignty, saying any talks with Trump would be “between two sovereign nations” and emphasized exploring alternatives beyond the U.S. for economic growth.

“We are over the shock of the American betrayal,” Carney added. “Now in the face of this crisis, united we are buying Canadian and standing together.”
