A wave of shock has swept across the French music scene after tragic news broke early Saturday morning. Just hours before a highly anticipated performance in Lyon, a beloved figure in the industry was rushed to hospital following a sudden medical emergency.
According to reports, the artist suffered a cardio-respiratory arrest late Friday night and was immediately admitted to the intensive care unit at Paris’ Pitié-Salpêtrière Hospital. Despite the efforts of medical professionals, the performer sadly passed away in the early hours of the following day.
Fans were left stunned, as the artist had been scheduled to perform an exclusive showcase at one of Lyon’s most iconic venues, with tickets already sold out and excitement running high. His team has yet to release an official statement, but tributes began pouring in across social media.
Only later did it become known that the man behind the tragedy was Jeremy Bana Owana, better known as French rapper Werenoi. The 31-year-old, who had captivated millions with his unique voice and powerful lyrics, was of Cameroonian descent and had been at the peak of his career.
Spotify France posted a tribute that read: “Werenoi left us last night. In just five years, the Montreuil rapper left a lasting mark on rap and French music as a whole. Our condolences to his family and loved ones.”
Music producer Babs emotionally added: “Rest in peace my brother, I love you!!!”, while rap duo Djadja & Dinaz confirmed the postponement of a music video release and extended their thoughts to his loved ones.
Werenoi was a standout name on the French rap scene. He headlined the 40th edition of the Francofolies de La Rochelle and won Album of the Year at the 2024 Flammes ceremony, where he appeared via video
