As the fire rapidly approached his property, there were no fire trucks in sight.
“When the fire started closing in, I realized I could only rely on myself,” he recalled.
All night and day, Carr doused his house and the surrounding area, preventing the flames from spreading. His efforts paid off: the house remained standing, along with the trees and even a small pond nearby.
Carr emphasized that had firefighting equipment been available, not only his home but also the neighboring properties could have been saved. However, the lack of proper response from authorities resulted in nearly all nearby homes being reduced to ashes.
“I did what I had to do. In life, there are things worth fighting for,” the ex-pilot reflected.
