Donald Trump is making major changes to the Department of Education, starting with massive layoffs.
Earlier this month, the department initiated a reduction in force (RIF), cutting nearly 50% of staff—about 1,950 employees—leaving roughly 2,183 workers. Nearly 600 employees opted for voluntary resignation or retirement.
But more drastic action is coming. A White House official revealed that Trump plans to sign an executive order shutting down the Department of Education, transferring authority to individual states. Secretary Linda McMahon has been directed to oversee the transition while maintaining essential services.
