The quake struck in the early afternoon on Friday, catching many residents off guard. Authorities reported no injuries, but the incident marks the fourth tremor to hit the area within just 24 hours — a rare cluster that is raising eyebrows.
What makes this particularly unsettling is the city’s close proximity to a fault line that has long been overshadowed by its more famous counterpart. However, experts now warn that this lesser-known fault may pose an even greater threat — and could be the true source of the long-feared “Big One.”
It was later confirmed that the quake occurred in Concord, California — a city of over 120,000 residents located just 25 miles from San Francisco. Concord lies only five miles from the Hayward Fault, a 74-mile stretch that scientists say is well overdue for a major seismic event.
While the better-known San Andreas Fault has long been the focus of public concern, recent studies from USGS and the University of California, Berkeley, have shifted the spotlight to Hayward. According to their projections, a 7.0 magnitude quake on this line could result in up to 2,500 deaths and extensive destruction across the Bay Area.
