The man being remembered is Matt Dee, the former Bondi Rescue lifeguard who appeared on the Australian series from 2008 to 2017. His death was confirmed on Wednesday in a statement shared by FTW Revolution, the organisation he co-founded.
“It is with the heaviest of hearts that we share the heartbreaking news of the passing of our Matt Dee,” the statement said. His loved ones said he had touched many lives, done “amazing work” and would be deeply missed.
Dee became known for his larger-than-life personality on one of Australia’s most famous beaches. Former colleagues and fans remembered his humour, warmth and Aussie charm as tributes poured in after the announcement.
Away from the cameras, Dee co-founded FTW Revolution, using events and community campaigns to support suicide prevention. The organisation says it raised at least $500,000 for Suicide Prevention Australia, where he also served as an ambassador.
The cause was deeply personal after Dee endured devastating losses within his family. He later used his public profile to speak about mental health, resilience and the importance of reaching out. Bondi lifeguard Trent “Maxi” Maxwell was among those paying tribute, writing: “Rest easy brother.”
Dee’s cause of death has not been publicly confirmed. The announcement also shared details of mental health support services. For many fans, he will be remembered not only as a familiar face from Bondi Rescue, but as someone who tried to turn personal pain into something that could help others.
