After Pope Francis’ passing, the Catholic Church quickly elected his successor. On May 8, white smoke rose from the Sistine Chapel, confirming Cardinal Robert Prevost — a Chicago-born American — as the 267th pope, and the first American pontiff in history.
Prevost chose the name Pope Leo XIV, referencing Pope Leo XIII (1878–1903), known for his intellectual and social contributions. Church officials noted Leo XIII’s encyclical Rerum Novarum helped shape modern Catholic social doctrine, emphasizing human dignity and labor rights.
Donald Trump reacted on Truth Social, calling it a “great honor” for the U.S. and said he looks forward to meeting the new pope.
Pope Leo XIV previously served as Bishop of Chiclayo, Peru, and led the Order of Saint Augustine. In his first address from St. Peter’s Basilica, he said:
“May peace be with all of you.”
Honoring Pope Francis, he called for a “missionary church” that builds bridges and welcomes all with dialogue and love.
