After white smoke rose from the Sistine Chapel on May 8, Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost, 69, was introduced to the world as Pope Leo XIV, the first American pope in history.
While many imagine popes as solemn and distant, the new pontiff’s brother, John Prevost, revealed a surprisingly human side. In an interview with NBC News, he shared that the two often play Wordle and Words With Friends together. “It helps take his mind off the real world,” John explained.
He even joked with his brother: “Did you watch the movie Conclave so you know how to behave?” — to which Pope Leo replied he’d just watched it.
People online were stunned by the revelation, with one Reddit user admitting: “I just realized the Pope has a family.” Another said, “It’s so nice to see the human side of the new pope.”
John also told CBS Chicago that Robert loved driving as a teen and used to play priest as a child, hinting at his future calling. The family found out he had been elected pope while watching the announcement live on TV. “Shock, disbelief, and a whole lot of pride,” John said.
He believes his brother will carry on Pope Francis’ legacy, especially in advocating for the poor and underprivileged.
