The entertainment world is mourning the loss of a gifted performer whose career spanned over six remarkable decades.
Known for his subtle brilliance and deeply human portrayals, he was a quiet force in British theatre, television, and radio — leaving behind a legacy of unforgettable moments on screen and beyond.
His family confirmed that he passed peacefully in his sleep after enjoying Sunday lunch with his sons — a simple, loving final day that reflected the man he was.
Only now is it being revealed that the beloved actor was Michael McStay, whose performances in Coronation Street, Doctor Who, and countless other productions made him a cherished figure across generations.
McStay was 92 years old and is survived by his wife, actress Jennifer Clulow, and their two sons, Darius and Paul. A representative shared: “It is with great sadness that we announce the death of Michael McStay, an actor of the highest standing and talented writer…”
Michael first gained attention in No Hiding Place, later appearing in Robbery, The Seeds of Doom, and portraying Alan Hoyle in Coronation Street — a role fondly remembered by fans.
Alongside his acting, he was also a prolific writer, penning plays for Radio 4 and the ITV comedy Pull the Other One. He even starred in a French TV series and spent time living in France.
Though he became more private in his later years, McStay’s wit and warmth endured — and when asked late in life if he regretted not becoming James Bond, he simply replied: “I had a family instead. I wouldn’t swap it for all the success in the world.”
