Urgent tsunami alert as 6.1-magnitude earthquake hits popular holiday destination

Early this morning, residents and tourists across a popular Mediterranean destination were jolted awake by violent tremors — and now, many fear what might come next.

Reports began flooding in just after sunrise: walls shaking, furniture rattling, windows groaning under invisible pressure. What began as a powerful earthquake quickly escalated into something even more terrifying — the threat of a tsunami.

Local authorities and emergency services were immediately placed on high alert, with coastlines being closely monitored for any abnormal wave activity. In panic, some holidaymakers rushed to pack their belongings, unsure whether to run inland or stay put and await further guidance.

It was only after seismic data came in that the epicenter was confirmed: the powerful 6.1-magnitude quake struck off the coast of Crete, near the city of Heraklion, sending shockwaves across the island and far beyond.

Witnesses from nearby towns described the quake as one of the strongest they had ever experienced. In the resort town of Malia, one resident said, “Everything shook like mad — never felt one that strong.” Others in surrounding areas reported shelves collapsing, doors slamming, and buildings creaking ominously.

British tourists took to social media to share their panic. “This is my worst nightmare,” one woman posted, adding that her children were terrified and she was constantly checking the sea for signs of a wave.

Despite the fear, no major injuries or damage were reported as of yet. Still, supermarkets saw products thrown to the floor, and rural roads suffered minor rockslides. Firefighters remain on patrol, assessing structural risks and preparing for aftershocks.

The European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre continues to monitor the region and has advised people in multiple countries, including Greece, Turkey, Italy, France, and Portugal, to stay alert and follow official updates.
