Rock legend dies aged 69

The rock and metal world is mourning the loss of a powerful voice that helped define a generation.

News of his passing sent waves of grief through music communities around the globe, as fans and fellow musicians alike remembered the unmistakable energy he brought to every stage.

Known for electrifying performances and a vocal style that could shake stadium walls, he was once part of the very movement that transformed British heavy metal in the late 1970s.

His influence reached far beyond the stage, inspiring a new wave of rockers to follow in his footsteps.

It was Paul Mario Day, the original frontman of Iron Maiden, whose death at the age of 69 was confirmed by the band More, with whom he performed after his early days with the legendary group. Paul had been a key figure during Iron Maiden’s formative years in the mid-70s, right before the band became a global phenomenon.

The group More shared a heartfelt tribute: “We are deeply saddened to learn of the passing of the great MORE vocalist Paul Mario Day. Paul was a huge part of the New Wave of British Heavy Metal—from his time in an early version of Iron Maiden to his fantastic performance on the Warhead album.”

They continued, “He was a beloved figure in British rock and played many unforgettable shows, including the legendary 1981 Monsters of Rock at Castle Donington with AC/DC and Whitesnake. Mike Freeland remembers him fondly as a ‘bloody great vocalist!’”

Day’s contributions went beyond Iron Maiden. He toured alongside major acts like Def Leppard and David Coverdale and left his mark with a powerful presence and unmistakable tone.

The band concluded their tribute with a call to fans: “It’s an honour for us to continue to play his music. We will always think of him every time we hit the opening notes to Warhead. Play his music loud and sing along. Rock in peace, Paul.”
