Hollywood icon dies at 67 – tributes pour in

Hollywood is mourning the loss of another creative soul whose fingerprints can be found on some of the most beloved cult classics in cinema.

Known for his dark humor, inventive writing, and ability to bring people together, he was a figure who left a lasting mark on horror fans and fellow filmmakers alike.

Friends and collaborators rushed to social media to share heartfelt tributes, describing him as a “unique guy,” a “creative force,” and above all, a true friend. Memories poured in of movie nights, early struggles in the industry, and moments on set that helped define a generation of horror.

That man was Scott Spiegel, the celebrated screenwriter and director who passed away at age 67. His death was announced by friends and confirmed through touching messages shared online, leaving the horror community in shock. Spiegel, known for co-writing Evil Dead II and his work on Intruder, carved out a special place in the genre with a blend of gore, wit, and genuine affection for the craft.

Actor Bruce Campbell, who met Spiegel during their Michigan days, called the news a “big personal loss,” reflecting on their shared journey from childhood friends to horror collaborators. Special effects master Robert Kurtzman added his own tribute, remembering Spiegel as the first filmmaker to give his newly founded FX company its debut credit.

Beyond his legendary cult classics, Spiegel also dabbled across genres. He penned The Rookie starring Clint Eastwood, directed From Dusk Till Dawn 2: Texas Blood Money, and even popped up in cameo roles, including in Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man 2 and Drag Me to Hell.

Spiegel’s career, which spanned over four decades, embodied a spirit of creativity that inspired countless others in the industry. Whether writing, directing, or simply cracking jokes among friends, he left a legacy that horror fans will celebrate for years to come.
