Heavy metal music legend dies at 81 – tributes pour in

The music world is mourning the loss of a figure whose sound defined an era.

His soulful voice and unmistakable piano style carried some of the most iconic rock anthems of the 1970s, leaving behind a legacy that still resonates with fans across generations.

Tributes have poured in from around the globe as listeners revisit the songs that shaped their youth and new audiences discover melodies that remain timeless.

His career spanned decades, marked by both global triumphs and deeply personal battles.

That man was Rick Davies, the co-founder, singer, pianist, and songwriter of Supertramp, who has died at the age of 81. Born in Swindon, England, in 1944, he discovered his love for music early, with his mother once noting that “music was the only thing he was any good at at school.” By 1969, he had joined forces with Roger Hodgson to form a band that would soon conquer international stages.

Supertramp’s breakthrough came with the 1979 album Breakfast in America, which topped charts worldwide and produced classics like The Logical Song and Take the Long Way Home. Davies’ gravelly yet soulful voice anchored tracks such as Goodbye Stranger and From Now On, cementing his place in rock history.

By the early 1980s, Davies and Hodgson had parted ways, but Davies continued to record and tour under the Supertramp banner, ensuring the band’s signature sound lived on. Even after being diagnosed with multiple myeloma in 2015 and forced to step away from large tours, he never abandoned music, performing smaller gigs with Ricky and the Rockets and finding joy in playing again.

In a rare 2018 interview, he admitted how grateful he was to still be enjoying music after years of treatment — a moment fans celebrated with relief and admiration. Beyond the stage, he was devoted to his wife, Sue, with whom he shared more than 50 years of marriage.

Supertramp’s official account called him “the voice and pianist behind the band’s most iconic songs,” a tribute echoed by fans worldwide. Songs like Bloody Well Right and Goodbye Stranger continue to inspire, keeping his voice alive long after his passing.
