New Pope Leo’s comments about Trump policies resurface after he’s named first American pope in history

After Pope Francis passed away last month at age 88, Cardinal Robert Prevost, 69, was officially named his successor today, taking the name Pope Leo XIV — the first American pope in history.

While Donald Trump publicly celebrated the news on Truth Social — calling it a “Great Honor for our Country” — resurfaced tweets show Pope Leo XIV has previously criticized Trump’s policies.

In one reposted tweet, now-Pope Leo XIV highlighted criticism of Trump and El Salvador’s president over deportation actions, quoting a bishop who asked:

“Do you not see the suffering? Is your conscience not disturbed?”

Another tweet the pope shared condemned U.S. immigration practices, saying:

“There is nothing remotely Christian… about a policy that takes children away from their parents and warehouses them in cages.”

He also appeared to push back against Trump’s VP pick, JD Vance, by sharing an op-ed titled “JD Vance is wrong: Jesus doesn’t ask us to rank our love for others.”

Despite their differences, Trump congratulated Pope Leo XIV and expressed interest in meeting him — but the newly elected pontiff’s past tweets may suggest that their first encounter could be more than just ceremonial.
